LINDER RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS REGARDING BORDER SECURITY

May 15, 2006

Congressman Linder issued the following statement in response to tonight’s statement by President Bush on border security:

“Immigrants who come to this country illegally disrespect our laws, penalize thousands of potential immigrants who have been patiently following U.S. immigration requirements, and unfairly rob the wallets of American taxpayers. We must get control of our borders and I applaud the President for making this a national priority.”

“I joined my colleagues in the House in December, 2005, to pass much-needed immigration-reform legislation, H.R. 4437, which has not been addressed in the Senate. I hope that the President’s words will spur the Senate to action to address this crippling national security issue.”

“Rather than sit idly by, I—like the President—will take another step this week toward a solution by introducing legislation that will mirror Mexico’s strict immigration policy. Opponents of reform often cast the issue in terms of fairness, and what could be fairer than regulating U.S. borders with the same tough laws used by Mexico for its borders?”
