On February 26, 1993, Al Qaeda attempted to destroy the World Trade Center and kill the innocent civilians who worked there.  In September of 2001, it became painfully clear that Al Qaeda had been quietly planning to complete the job during the previous eight years.

It has now been six and a half years since the September 11 attacks.  The threats we face today are no different than the threats we faced on September 10, 2001.  The terrorists are just as willing to attack us today as they were then.  They hate our nation, our people and our freedom.  And as long as we are free, the terrorists will target us.

We are safer today than we were then.  The terrorist threat is being taken seriously by the government – intelligence agencies, homeland security, and our military are focused on the job of tracking down and fighting the terrorist threat.  And the vigilance of each person has made us all safer.  We must maintain our vigilance and focus on defending freedom.

The Department of Homeland Security states that “all Americans should continue to be vigilant, take notice of their surroundings, and report suspicious items or activities to local authorities immediately.  Everyone should establish an emergency preparedness kit and emergency plan for themselves and their family, and stay informed about what to do during an emergency.”

The following sites provide information on the importance of each of us being prepared as citizens, and I hope you will take some time to review the information that may help ensure the safety of our communities:

There are hundreds of email and telephone scams that try to get people to provide their Social Security numbers or bank account information.  It looks like criminals have added some new scams in an attempt to separate you from your hard-earned money, and this is just a brief warning to be cautious.

Although the economic stimulus legislation has not yet even been put into law, there are already scams arising that involve using the rebates as a lure.  The Internal Revenue Service just put out a very helpful warning about these scams, which attempt to use the rebates, the IRS, and tax filing season to trick you.  The warning can be read here.  It is another good reminder to be wary of such scams as identity theft and loss of your hard-earned money could result.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) is leading “severe weather week” this week with the goal of preparing the people of Georgia for the hazards that could affect our citizens in a weather-related event or a disaster.  There are a number of good web sites (http://gema.state.ga.us/, http://ready.ga.gov/ and http://www.ready.gov/) that provide information on how you can prepare with your families.  In addition, below are links on seven disaster and weather-related education topics that have been recommended for review this week and throughout the year to raise our level of preparedness:

Family Preparedness
NOAA Weather Radio
Thunderstorm Safety
Tornado Safety
Lightning Safety
Flooding

It has been some time since I last posted a message about the current list of supporters that the FairTax has amassed, but it is truly remarkable that the list continues to grow in the House of Representatives.  There are now 70 co-sponsors of the FairTax.  The American people are looking for solutions that will provide long-term economic growth and job creation, and the time has come for a serious national economic debate about fundamental tax reform ideas that will ensure our nation’s economic growth – and the American Dream – for generations to come.
