Norton Continues Voting Rights Community Conversations Today with ANC Commissioners and the Anacostia Coordinating Council

November 30, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will continue her series of Norton in Your Neighborhood Community Conversations on next steps on D.C. voting rights, statehood, and other options with Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Philip Pannell and the Anacostia Coordinating Council, a board consisting of a broad range of concerned community leaders and organizations devoted to the development of the Anacostia neighborhood, at Anacostia Community Museum, 1901 Fort Place SE, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

"The best way to get feedback as we seek to work through the gun bill to gain voting rights is in these small group community conversations that have proved very useful in maximizing participation and in responding to residents' interest by offering a roadmap of where we were, over what terrain we have come, how we got to where we are today, and possible ways forward," said Norton.

The Congresswoman, who has already held numerous community conversations, launched these discussions after a dangerous gun amendment delayed passage of the pending voting rights bill earlier this year.  Residents continue to contact Norton to pass the D.C. House Voting Rights Act, while others propose suggestions on virtually every option to gain voting rights.  Norton will also discuss the likelihood of voting rights passing in the new Congress, and other federal issues such as the pending unemployment insurance bill and the healthcare legislation.
