Southwest Louisiana
Acadiana and Southwest Louisiana, the heart of Cajun Country, is a beautiful part of the country with wonderful people, scenic habitats, diverse wildlife and a story to tell.
In 2005, much of Southwest Louisiana was slammed by Hurricane Rita. The storm was one of the most powerful to ever enter the Gulf of Mexico, and many communities in the area continue to rebuild. The determination and spirit of the people in my district is evidenced everyday as schools, government buildings and homes are repaired or reconstructed often with the aid of neighbors.Wildlife and our diverse habitats bring thousands of visitors to Southwest Louisiana annually. Crocodiles, crawfish, redfish all provide both a reminder of our Cajun roots and a challenge to sportsmen around the region.
Louisiana is a national leader in energy production. Approximately one-third of all U.S. oil and gas travels through Louisiana, and the state ranks fifth for both crude oil and natural gas production. Twenty-five percent of the nation’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will run through Louisiana’s Seventh District by the year 2015.

USDA Releases Emergency Information for Disaster Designated Parishes
Dec 1 2010Washington, DC – The Department of Agriculture declared on November 30 the following parishes in Southwest Louisiana disaster areas as a result of a drought beginning on March 23, 2010 and continuing:
Acadia
Calcasieu
Cameron
Evangeline
Jefferson Davis
Lafayette
St. Landry
Vermilion
After reviewing Loss Assessment Reports, the USDA determined “there were sufficient production losses to warrant a Secretarial natural disaster designation.” With this decision, farm operators in these areas are eligible to be considered for assistance from the Farm Service Agency, including emergency loans and Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments.
“I am pleased that the USDA has taken action to help farmers across the state,” said Rep. Charles Boustany, Jr. (R-Southwest Louisiana). “I encourage those in need of emergency assistance to contact their local USDA offices as soon as possible.”
Farmers in these areas have eight months from the date of this emergency declaration to apply for emergency loan assistance on a case-by-case basis. Individuals can contact their local USDA offices for additional loan information, or visit the USDA website at:
