Rep. Jackson congratulates Camille Scott, on her work titled "Eagle" which was selected as the Artistic Discovery 2009 winner for the 2nd District.

Winner of "An Artistic Discovery 2009" Visits Washington

Camille Scott's "Eagle" is flying high today at the U.S. Capitol now that the exhibition of An Artistic Discovery 2009 winners is officially open. Scott, who will be a senior at Hillcrest High School in the fall, represents the Second Congressional District with her technically impressive scratchboard work. Her "Eagle" joins the work of more than 400 high school students from around the nation who won the annual competition in their congressional districts.

"Congratulations and welcome to Washington! We're very proud of you," Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., told Camille when she and her family entered his Capitol Hill office. Jackson, a strong supporter of the arts and arts education, said, "I believe participation in the arts is a wonderful creative outlet for everyone, and can lead to rewarding careers for people as talented as Camille. Competitions like An Artistic Discovery give students an opportunity to take their work to another level, and the rest of us can enjoy the work as well as inspire the young artists to continue."

"I didn't expect this," Scott said while standing near the Capitol steps waiting to be part of a group photo of all of the winners. She said her art teacher at Hillcrest, Jean Lewis, tapped "Eagle" for the competition. "It wasn't even one of my favorites. I like much big pictures," she added. But "Eagle" was big enough to win Scott a trip to Washington, and spend a year on display at the Capitol.
