Surface Transportation High Priority Project Program

Below is a list of requests I am submitting to the House Committee on Transportation for the Surface Transportation High Priority Project Program in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA–LU).
Project Name: Maintenance and Terminal Facility Rehabilitation
Entity: Detroit Department of Transportation
Project Description: This project will ensure an updated Coolidge Complex including the following renovations: garage improvements including hoist replacement, electrical equipment, concrete paving, upgrade locker rooms, renovate the terminal, install an elevator (ADA compliance), perimeter, fencing, security system, rehabilitate/construct an alternative fuels facility, fare box house, guard house, painting and lighting upgrades.

Project Name: Facilities Acquisition & Construction
Entity: Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART)
Project Description: Funding would be used for the purchase of property to serve as a transit center/park and ride area, creating a central hub where several routes meet and passengers have a safe place to transfer. Drivers would have a layover facility and services would be consistent for passengers. A transit center/park and ride lot would provide needed parking for commuters and would encourage the use of public transportation.

Project Name: Bus Replacement
Entity: Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART)
Project Description: Funding would provide for the acquisition of hybrid-electric fuel buses, providing mobility for the population of Southeast Michigan , including eligible seniors and persons with disabilities. The new transit vehicles will also be equipped with automatic vehicle locators, updated radio systems, digital video cameras, and other safety equipment.

Project Name: Grosse Ille Parkway and Jefferson Avenue
Entity: County of Wayne
Project Description: Project is to design, engineer and rehabilitate the intersection of Grosse Ile Parkway and West Jefferson in the City of Trenton , including the extension of an insufficient right turn lane in the approach to the intersection; traffic signal modernization; roadway drainage deficiency correction and pavement surface improvement. This intersection provides the only eastbound connection across the Detroit River to the island community of Grosse Ile. The current configuration of lanes and the approach to the intersection are very constrained and, in addition to structural deterioration and drainage issues, create unnecessary congestion and hazards.

Project Name: Entrance Way
Entity: University of Detroit
Project Description: This project includes creating double entry lanes for incoming vehicles that will allow visitors to receive information in one lane and will allow a continuous flow members of the University and community in the permit lane. The new roadway and walkways will provide clear ingress and egress for vehicles and pedestrians. No longer will vehicles need to line up on McNichols Road due to the University entry booth being too close to the street. By moving the entrance back fifty feet from the current location this will avoid stacking onto roadways, which causes traffic incidents and impedes pedestrian walkways.

Project Name: Michigan-Ohio University Transportation Center
Entity: University of Detroit
Project Description: Originally funded in the SAFETEA-LU reauthorization legislation, the MIOH-UTC will continue to work to significantly improve transportation efficiency, safety and security in Michigan, Ohio and across the nation by increasing the effective capacity of existing transportation infrastructure, reducing transportation energy dependence through alternative fuels, and enhancing supply chain performance. The MIOH-UTC serves the needs of the nation and region by completing specific educational, research, outreach and technology transfer projects. The MIOH-UTC identifies and selects such projects through processes that directly involve leaders from the US DOT, MDOT, ODOT, regional agencies and a variety of leaders from industry and academia.

Project Name: M-85 reconstruction
Entity: State of Michigan
Project Description: Improve the M-85 Corridor from Sibley to Goddard
