Foreign Affairs and Trade

Fair trade and open markets for American goods and agricultural products are critical to our economic prosperity. However, while trade can create jobs and expand opportunities in some sectors, it often costs jobs in others. Congressman Hinojosa believes that more funding is needed for trade adjustment assistance and that worker retraining must lead to real, good-paying jobs.

Congressman Hinojosa helped Fox Packaging Company in McAllen, Texas, resolve a problem it was having in importing fabric from China. Through his efforts, the US Customs Service released Fox's shipment so that the company could fill its orders and keep its plant open, keeping 250 employees on the payroll in McAllen, Texas.

The U.S is currently negotiating a variety of free trade agreements including US-Korea, US-Peru, US - Colombia and a renewal of the so-called "fast track" authority for the President. These treaties are in various stages but several are expected to come before the Congress for consideration this year. Congressman Hinojosa is examining each treaty individually to ensure that the interests of South Texas, labor, the environment, and the U.S. are protected.
