I proudly serve as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning and Competitiveness on the House Education and Labor Committee. This Subcommittee has jurisdiction over all federal higher education programs including student financial aid, adult education and minority serving institutions. Its first priority will be completing work on the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. In addition, the subcommittee will reauthorize the Workforce Investment Act that funds job training programs, adult education programs and English as a Second Language programs.

I am a senior member on the House Committee on Financial Services. This committee has jurisdiction over the entire financial services industry, including the securities, insurance, banking, and housing industries. The Committee also oversees the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, the SEC, and other financial services regulators. I sit on the Capital Markets Subcommittee, which watches over the U.S. capital markets, securities and insurance industries and government-sponsored enterprises such as Fannie Mae. It also oversees the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as the self-regulatory organizations that police the securities markets. In addition, I sit on the Financial Institutions Subcommittee, which focuses on banks, depository institutions, deposit insurance, and the overall soundness of the banking system.

I am a former member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. The Committee on Foreign Affairs has jurisdiction over the State Department and US Foreign Aid Agencies. I served on the Subcommittee on Europe and the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and the Global Environment.
