Congressman Rubén Hinojosa will be the keynote speaker at the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council’s public workshop at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, October, 30, 2010 at the La Feria High School Cafetorium at 901 N. Canal Street. Congressman Hinojosa will speak on the Lower Rio Grande Valley Regional Economic Adjustment Plan as it relates to regional flood control and its impact on the economy and its affect on residents.
“We are still assessing our flood control system after being hit by Hurricanes Dolly and Alex which both caused flooding and raised the level of the Rio Grande River to an historic level”, said Rep. Hinojosa. “We all watched our levees very closely hoping that they would hold back the rising water and they did. But more has to be done to protect our homes and our families and our businesses and that is why this workshop is so very important for everyone who lives in the Lower Rio Grande Valley”.
The LRGVDC is hosting the free public workshop which begins at 9:30 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) Commissioner Edward Drusina will also participate in the free workshop. Commissioner Drusina will speak at 10:40 a.m. on the Rio Grande River and USIBWC Floodway System. This workshop is an opportunity to hear from experts about the flood control system and the regional efforts to improve the drainage infrastructure. It is also an opportunity for participants to express their concerns, their experiences, and their ideas on flood issues.
