CONGRESSMAN RUBÉN HINOJOSA ANNOUNCES MERCEDES “MED-HIGH” NAMED BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL BY U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa announced South Texas High School for Health Professions, “Med-High”, in Mercedes, was selected as on of the 2010 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

“I would like to congratulate all of the students, staff and administrators at Med-High for their dedication and hard work,” said Rep. Hinojosa. “This prestigious designation shows their commitment to excellence in education. It proves that when students have the focus and are provided with a productive learning environment and dedicated teachers, success will always follow”.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress and helped close gaps in achievement, especially among disadvantaged and minority students. The program is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will honor the nation’s 314 award recipients at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 16th, in Washington, D.C.

At the invitation of Secretary Duncan, the principal and one teacher from each school is invited to attend. South Texas High School for Health Professions Principal, Ms. Barbara Heater will be in Washington for the awards ceremony, along with Med-High Foundations Personal Fitness teacher, Mr. Rigoberto Olivarez.


Each of the schools will receive a Blue Ribbon Schools plaque and a flag to signify its status. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress and helped close gaps in achievement, especially among disadvantaged and minority.

Med-High Assistant Principal, Mrs. Irma Castillo said the students and teachers were elated when the heard they had received the award. “We have very dedicated students and our teachers give 100%,” said Castillo. “This is all due to the success of our students who are very happy to have been recognized.”
