PRIDE promotes Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment across 38 counties. It was launched in 1997 by U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers and the late General James Bickford, former Secretary of the Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet. PRIDE provides funding to communities across our region for sanitary sewer and water projects, as well as cleaning up trash along our roadsides, lakes and streams. PRIDE has removed thousands of straight pipes from our streams, providing sanitary sewer to thousands of families.
There is also an education component of PRIDE, a vital key to the future of our environment. PRIDE Clubs are established in school districts across our region. With PRIDE funding, students now have access to outdoor classrooms, nature trails, greenhouses, wetlands and rain gardens, recycling projects and solar projects. Some clubs have even been inspired to create their own environmental research projects to encourage their own school districts to save energy and use more environmentally-friendly products.
To date, PRIDE has recruited more than 292,000 volunteers logging more than one million volunteer hours, provided 29,485 homes with access to sanitary wastewater treatment, and cleaned up 139,725 tons of trash. Volunteers have also removed nearly one million old tires across the region.
