How People Can Help

A catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti Tues., Jan. 14, 2010, leaving thousands dead, collapsed buildings, and utter devastation in its wake. Here's how you can help:

Basic Information & Telephone Numbers
The U.S. government's Haiti Earthquake Task Force has set up a number to call to relay information concerning American Citizens. That number is 1-888-407-4747.

Concerned residents interested in volunteering or offering services, contact the Center for International Disaster Information at 703-276-1914.

A number of organizations are allowing people who wish to lend in-kind or monetary donations, including via text message and the Internet. For more information, you can visit the White House's Web site or organizations listed below to find out how you can contribute.

If constituents have a significant in-kind contribution to make – such as a plane, a cargo ship, a team of doctors, portable generators, or large-scale water purification equipment – please direct them to log onto the website of the Center for International Disaster Information at www.cidi.org .  The Center for International Disaster Information is a partner organization of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) that can help put usable donations on the ground in Haiti. Prospective donors can register their donation here and CIDI will respond with information about the international community’s ability to absorb this offer.
