Weiner to Incoming House GOP over Refusal to Decline Health Coverage: “The 112th Congress Hasn’t Even Begun, But The Hypocrisy Has”

New York City – Today, following news that so far only two newly-elected GOP House members have declined the health insurance that comes with the job, despite a new poll showing that a majority of Americans believe that candidates who campaigned against health care reform should do so, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D – Queens and Brooklyn) released the following statement:

“It’s no surprise that Americans believe their elected representatives should actually practice what they preach. A new poll of registered voters found that 53% believe those who won election running against health care reform should decline the plans that come with their new jobs in Congress.”

“Unfortunately, though the 112th Congress hasn’t even begun, the GOP hypocrisy already has.”

“Republicans railed against health care reform as a campaign issue, but when they’re offered their own health insurance – which is exactly the same as what will be offered to uninsured Americans under the reform legislation – they’re glad to partake.”
