Congressional Black Caucus Marks 60th Anniversary Of Integration Of Armed Forces

July 23, 2008

Washington, D.C.- “Sixty years ago, President Harry S. Truman boldly signed an executive order to make the armed forces more reflective of the United States of America,” said Congresswoman Carolyn C. Kilpatrick (MI), Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. “Sixty years later, due to racial integration, brave men and women of color are unselfishly risking life and limb to protect our liberties and keep America’s homeland and borders safe. Their service to our country is immeasurable.”

“Historically, African American troops have served our country with supreme pride and honor. Namely, the Tuskegee Airmen have left an indelible mark on the military and the world. As Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, I am privileged to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the integration of United States Armed Forces and salute all the men and women who have served our country with unwavering strength and courage.”

Congressman Kendrick Meek (D-FL) added, “From the Revolutionary War to the present wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, African Americans and other minorities in uniform have excelled in service to our country. Thanks to President Truman’s leadership, the U.S. Armed Forces is a pioneer in providing equal opportunity for all its uniformed members, and the military remains the truest melting pot in our society.”

“Through his executive order to integrate our nation’s Armed Services, President Truman helped our country leap forward toward greater social justice for minorities and women, paving the road to equality within the U.S. and strengthening the very foundation and moral character of our nation,” Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said. “Minorities have played a pivotal role in shaping our Armed Services, and I am proud to see this role flourish today, serving as a model for an integrated society that can truly offer justice for all.”
