Washington, D.C.- “The decision, made by the Louisiana appeals court, to overturn the adult conviction of the six young African American students, dubbed ‘Jena 6’, should be commended,” said Congresswoman Carolyn C. Kilpatrick (D-MI), Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. “However this act of delayed justice will permanently impact the lives of these young men and their families.”
“This case and the culture of intolerance in the town of Jena, Louisiana should be thoroughly examined and redressed. Institutional change must occur from the school board to the city council. Our society can not thrive when communities, in particular schools, do not foster healthy race relations and teach the importance of sensitivity."
“The Congressional Black Caucus, 43 Members from 21 states representing Americans of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, will continue to support the families, attorneys, and the coalitions of conscience that are committed to building a stronger and more united America.”
