Washington, D.C.- Congresswoman Carolyn C. Kilpatrick (D-MI), Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, in collaboration with Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA) and Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-IL), co-chairs of the Congressional Black Caucus Education Task Force, will host an Educational Summit on July 23, 2007, 2:00 – 6:00 PM, in Room 2141 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
The purpose of the summit is to generate dialogue among Members of Congress and the education community on crucial issues impacting the education of African Americans. Specific topics will include:
• Early childhood development;
• No Child Left Behind Act;
• Dropout Crisis in America;
• Minority access to college & financial aid and;
• Education in youth correctional facilities.
According to Chairwoman Kilpatrick, “The centerpiece of the CBC’s Agenda for the 110th Congress is ensuring that every American child has access to a first class education. As a former educator, I understand how the quality of an academic program can impact future success. We must invest in education to eliminate existing disparities, to strengthen children and families, and to ensure our ability to compete in this global economy.”
“Our aim is to begin a dialogue among congressional Members and staff and education experts on issues affecting African American youth. People are doing great work to improve access to quality education for our youth, but there are not many opportunities for experts to get together to discuss concerns and best practices. This is an effort to begin that dialogue,” said Rep. Scott.
“Finding ways to more effectively educate our young people must be one of the top priorities of Congress,” said Rep. Davis. “This Summit is an avenue that will open and facilitate meaningful dialogue.”
This event is open to the public.
