Since the Democratic Leadership has us voting on Sunday, some of my colleagues and I have put together a Sunday Service at the Capitol.

This is it.  The final stretch for the majority party's health care bill.  Every deal has been made.  They have ignored the American people who said over and over again, "We do not want this bill."  And now, the only way Democrats can force their bill through is to use legislative gimmicks.

Not only will they be using reconciliation to avoid the Senate filibuster rules, but now House Democrats are considering the "Slaughter Solution" to pass the Senate version of the bill without even voting on it.  It would deem the Senate bill passed, and then a vote on the reconciliation language would happen.  For more information on the scenarios for the bill, please visit: http://rules-republicans.house.gov/ShortTopics/Read.aspx?id=345.

I continue to remain strongly opposed to this bill and to this process.

UPDATE: I am pleased to announce that Republicans have implemented an immediate ban on all earmarks.

I signed a letter to Chairman of the Republican Conference Mike Pence  requesting a Conference wide meeting to discuss a year-long moratorium on earmarks.  34 of my Republican colleagues have also signed the letter.  See the text and other signatories here.

Congressman Jeff Miller (FL-01), Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-02), Congressman Jack Kingston (GA-01), and Congressman Mark Souder (IN-03) today demanded an audit of stimulus funds.  Just this morning, reports showed that Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton’s pollster, received $6 million in stimulus money to preserve three jobs. Furthermore, the Administration still hasn’t thoroughly addressed the major discrepancies and inaccuracies of reporting on Recovery.gov. With the Government Accountability Office stating that one out of every 10 jobs created by the stimulus are also fake, it’s high time for Congress to act.  The National Commission on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will create a bipartisan commission to investigate the effects of this “stimulus” bill.

Congressman Jeff Miller: “In my home state of Florida 52 jobs were created in the 34th Congressional District, according to the Recovery.gov website.  46 jobs were created in District 00. However, these districts simply don’t exist.  How can the Administration expect us to trust their dubious jobs created numbers when they can’t even manage their own website?  We need an audit of this spending immediately.”

Congressman Joe Wilson: “It’s time for Congress to demand answers on behalf of the hardworking taxpayers that we represent.  The misnamed stimulus is one of the largest spending bills in our nation’s history and it is critical that American taxpayers receive adequate answers as to the whereabouts of stimulus funds.  I can not fathom how Hillary Clinton’s pollster received $6 million to preserve just three jobs when that could sustain dozens of South Carolina’s families for life.  I urge Speaker Pelosi to consider our legislation to ensure full accountability of every stimulus dollar spent.”

Congressman Jack Kingston: “What do you get for $18 million?  The Obama Administration’s website that creates phony congressional districts and fishy jobs numbers.  It’s time to pull back the curtain and get some of that transparency and accountability promised on the campaign trail.  Until this Administration can provide the American people with an accurate accounting of their record breaking spending scheme, Congress should dry out the trough.”

Congressman Mark Souder: “Not only has the stimulus failed in its goal of reining in rising unemployment, the published report tracking the funds revealed imprecise statistics, nonexistent congressional districts and significantly overstated the number of jobs created. I am pleased to join Congressman Joe Wilson on this important legislation to put an end to this unaccountable stimulus spending spree. During this time of economic recession, Hoosier taxpayers deserve to know where and how their dollars are being spent.”

H.R. 4219, the National Commission on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (text can be found here) will create a ten member panel, appointed by the President and Democrat and Republican leaders in the House and Senate, will investigate how many jobs have actually been saved or created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (P.L. 111-5); the circumstances in which those jobs have been saved or created; and, the effectiveness of measures taken to prevent the improper payment of funds.  Following the investigation, the Commission will make recommendations on what changes could be made to save or create more jobs and what steps can be taken to prevent the improper allocation of taxpayer dollars.

Many Americans woke up this morning and turned on the television or searched the internet to find out the latest on Tiger Woods and his wrecked black Cadillac Escalade.  However, on this rainy morning in Northern Virginia, another black Cadillac meandered through rolling hills on hallowed ground.   This vehicle carried Medal of Honor recipient, Sergeant Leonard B. Keller, to his final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery.

While a high profile athlete remained ensconced in his luxury mansion behind the walls of his gated community, a caisson with six black horses slowly walked along the rain soaked asphalt.  Family members followed, huddled close to each other beneath umbrellas trying to shield themselves from the rainy and dreary cold morning. They came to pay tribute to a father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

As the cars drove past on State Road 110 and planes flew overhead leaving Reagan National Airport, I am sure no one knew who was being buried, their name, age, or hometown.  On this day it was a man who showed uncommon valor in the jungles of Vietnam.

On May 2, 1967, Sergeant Leonard B. Keller and his unit were sweeping through an area in Vietnam where an enemy ambush had occurred earlier. The unit suddenly came under intense automatic weapons and small-arms fire from a number of enemy bunkers and numerous snipers in nearby trees. Sgt. Keller quickly moved to a position where he could fire at a bunker from which automatic fire was received, killing one Viet Cong who attempted to escape. Leaping to the top of a dike, he and a comrade charged the enemy bunkers, dangerously exposing themselves to the enemy fire. Armed with a light machine gun, Sgt. Keller and his comrade began a systematic assault on the enemy bunkers. While Sgt. Keller neutralized the fire from the first bunker with his machinegun, the other soldier threw in a hand grenade, killing its occupant. Then he and the other soldier charged a second bunker, killing its occupant. A third bunker contained an automatic rifleman who had pinned down much of the friendly platoon. Again, with utter disregard for the fire directed to them, the two men charged, killing the enemy within.

Continuing their attack, Sgt. Keller and his comrade assaulted four more bunkers and eliminated the enemy threat. During their furious assault, Sgt. Keller and his comrade had been almost continuously exposed to intense sniper fire as the enemy desperately sought to stop their attack. The ferocity of their assault had carried the soldiers beyond the line of bunkers into the tree line, forcing snipers to flee. The two men gave immediate chase, driving the enemy away from the friendly unit. When his ammunition was exhausted, Sgt. Keller returned to the platoon to assist in the evacuation of the wounded. The two-man assault had driven an enemy platoon from a well prepared position, accounted for numerous enemy dead, and prevented further friendly casualties. Sgt. Keller's selfless heroism and indomitable fighting spirit saved the lives of many of his comrades and inflicted serious damage on the enemy.

People fall from grace from time to time -- politicians, athletes, pastors, and others.  We are human and far from perfect.  Why is it that so many are more interested in the tabloid news of today than the true life stories of real Americans, real heroes?  Those who always give more than they take. Those who are determined to leave this world a better place than they found it.

This morning a man was buried in the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery.  A man of simple means.  Not a billionaire or a star athlete.  Too often we put more attention on worth or the material things a person has rather than the things a person does.

As I stood at the gravesite this morning and watched the four other Medal of Honor recipients in attendance salute as soldiers slowly folded the American flag that draped Sgt. Keller’s casket, I was reminded of the thousands of men and women who make tremendous sacrifices defending this great nation.  Sgt. Keller and the 92 living Medal of Honor recipients are heroes in every sense of the word.  They have all answered the call of duty, but more than that, they have placed the lives of others and the liberty of an entire nation above their own lives.  They were all willing to make the ultimate sacrifice so that we may all enjoy the fruits of freedom.

On this week after Thanksgiving, I am thankful for heroes like Sgt. Leonard B. Keller.  May God Bless Sgt. Keller and his family.

I support the Republican plan for health care that lowers health care costs for Americans, increases access to affordable health care, and promotes healthier lifestyles -- without the crushing debt or government-run health care.

The full text of the Republican plan can be found here.  It is being offered as a substitute to the Pelosi health care bill.

Today I'm joining fellow Republicans to continue reading Nancy Pelosi's health care bill.  Reading will take place from 2 - 6pm today, and I will be reading from 2 - 230pm.  You can watch a live webcast at http://health.burgess.house.gov/webcast/

As I read through the bill,  I continue to find amazing and dangerous facts the Majority Party is trying to rush through.  You can read the text of the bill here.

Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leaders released their new version of the health care bill.  It is 1,990 pages of government bureaucracy, weighing 19 pounds when printed.  I will be delivering a copy to the Tyron library in Pensacola at 12:30 p.m. today.  Copies will be delivered to all public libraries in the 1st District as soon as possible.

I've also posted a copy of the bill on the website here.

UPDATE: The Democrats' Manager's Amendment is now available here.
