Bunker Hill, Downtown, Los Angeles, Oct 28 -

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) congratulated the residents and staff of Angelus Plaza on the affordable housing community’s 30th anniversary of serving older adults in Los Angeles.

The congresswoman also thanked Dr. Laverne Joseph, President of the Retirement Housing Foundation which operates Angelus Plaza, for honoring her at the anniversary event with its City View Community Service Award for her ongoing support of the retirement community and its 1300 residents.

The congresswoman made the following acceptance remarks:

“For the past 24 years I have had the privilege of representing the residents of Angelus Plaza and have seen firsthand how Angelus Plaza and the Retirement Housing Foundation have provided much-needed, quality housing and services for seniors in Downtown L.A.

When seniors come to live at Angelus Plaza, they and their families have the confidence that they will be well taken care of and have access to a variety of services and activities both on and off-campus that will sustain their well being.

As the daughter of a 93 year-old mother, the classes and activities organized by Angelus Plaza staff here onsite, are extremely important to enhancing the quality of life of Angelus Plaza residents.

Given the diversity at Angelus Plaza, the residents learn about different cultures and subjects, and get some exercise, but they also get a chance to socialize with each other.

As we all know, this social interaction is so important at all stages of our lives and the residents at Angelus Plaza residents have many opportunities to do so, especially if they attend the dances.

I too want to commend the staff for their work on behalf of the residents of Angeles Plaza and for their efforts to bring new events and classes to keep the residents happy and active.

They are always helpful and responsive to me and my staff whenever we need to get information to the residents on issues that are important to them such as social security and Medicare or on the latest details from Washington, DC.

I also want to extend my sincere congratulations to my fellow honorees, Dr. Fernando Torres-Gil who worked for my father former Congressman Edward R. Roybal and Peklar Pilavjian a dear friend from the St. Vincent Jewelry Center.

To all of you here tonight I thank you for your support of Angeles Plaza.

By supporting Angelus Plaza, you are also thanking the seniors who live here for their service to our country. Your support shows that they are valued and they have self-worth.

To everyone associated with Angelus Plaza – the residents, staff and Advisory Council I sincerely thank you for the honor of presenting me with this year’s Community Service Award.”
