Hurricane Katrina: What you can do to help victims in the Gulf

My deepest condolences go to the victims of Hurricane Katrina who lost their lives, their homes and their livelihoods.  My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been harmed by this terrible storm.

Many of you have been calling and e-mailing me asking how individuals can help the people affected by Hurricane Katrina.  As a result, I am providing the following information on organizations that are helping people on the ground in the affected states.

Thirteen years ago, the rest of the country opened their hearts and wallets to those of us who experienced Hurricane Andrew's devastation.  Now is the time for us to return their generosity.

How to Help

Without a doubt, monetary contributions are the way to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.  This type of donation is the easiest for organizations to utilize because it allows the organization to decide what is needed and get those supplies to individuals as quickly as possible.  Indeed, if you make a donation online today, your money could be put to use tomorrow by the organization to which you donate.

Officials are asking you not to try to go to the affected areas because the roads need to be kept open for emergency personnel and organized relief efforts.

Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food.  However, you should not send cash in the mail and do not respond to or donate to organizations that you are not familiar with.

Below are ways that you can donate funds or volunteer to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina:

Donate while shopping locally:

KMart/Sears: At the register, you can add any amount to be donated to the Red Cross.

Publix: At the register, you can add any amount to be donated to the Red Cross.

Winn Dixie: At the register, you can add any amount to be donated to the Red Cross.

Wal-Mart: At the register, you can donate to the Red Cross.
