Anacostia Community Museum

Summary:
As the Smithsonian Institution's museum of African American history and culture, the Museum explores American history, society, and creative expression from an African American perspective.
Address: 1901 Fort Place, SE, Washington, D.C.
Closest Metro Stop: Anacostia (Green Line) and transfer to the W2 or W3 bus.

Arts and Industries Building


Summary: The Arts and Industries Building has a special role among Smithsonian buildings—as the original home of the National Museum. Designed in a High Victorian style by the Washington architectural firm of Cluss and Schulze, it opened in 1881 in time for the inaugural ball of President James A. Garfield. The building's exhibition halls are currently closed in preparation for renovation.

Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

Summary: Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is the Smithsonian's museum of international modern and contemporary art, with over 60 works of art in the outdoor sculpture garden.

National Air and Space Museum

Summary: The Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum maintains the largest collection of historic air and spacecraft in the world. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

Summary: The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. The building opened in December, 2003, and provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall. The two sites together showcase the largest collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world.

Summary: The National Museum of American History collects artifacts of all kinds—from gowns to locomotives—to preserve for the American people an enduring record of their past. The Museum has more than 3 million artifacts in its collection.

National Postal Museum

Summary: The National Postal Museum, a Smithsonian Institution museum, is located in the old Post Office building next to Union Station in Washington, D.C. The Museum was created by an agreement between the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Postal Service in 1990 and opened to the public in 1993.

National Zoo

Summary: It is a 163-acre zoological park set amid Rock Creek National Park in the heart of Washington, D.C. You can visit the Zoo to see 2,000 individual animals of 400 different species.
