So you may better understand the duties and responsibilities of interns, the internship program is outlined below. Thank you for your interest. Goals of the Tenth Congressional District’s Intern program:

To provide each intern with a substantive work experience

To educate each intern on how a congressional office operates, exposing him or her to all facets of the office;

To have each intern leave with increased skills and a portfolio of work.

Responsibilities of Washington and District Office Interns:

Interns will become proficient in the general procedures for operating a Congressional office. As opportunities become available, interns will be provided practical, hands-on assignments to reinforce the many educational experiences afforded. Interns will be supervised by a designated individual.

Interns must also keep current on district, national and international news. Interns should read national Washington newspapers and local Cleveland newspapers daily.

Interns must also have a working knowledge of government, particularly the legislative process and Ohio government. The House of Representatives’ Home Page and Congressional Quarterly are good sources of information. Also, government texts provide a good base of knowledge as well.

Components of the Internship experience:
In the Washington office:

•  Constituent Relations -- Interns will develop constituent relations skills through hands-on assignments involving drafting correspondence on issues and legislation about which constituents are concerned, receiving and summarizing constituent communications by telephone and in person, and researching and developing materials for distribution via constituent newsletters.

•  Legislative Research and Policy Development -- Interns will develop legislative research skills through assigned projects on issues related to pending legislation. Utilizing materials from the Library of Congress, the Congressional Research Service, the Congressional Record, the Internet, lobbying organizations, and a variety of other sources, the interns will prepare briefing books or memorandum summaries providing the research results and recommendations to the Congressman and his staff.

In the District office:

•  Casework Research -- Interns will develop casework research skills through assigned cases related to constituent problems with Federal agencies. They will increase their knowledge of the workings of a variety of Federal agencies through working with them to resolve constituent problems.

•  Constituent Relations -- Interns will develop constituent relations skills through hands-on assignments involving drafting correspondence on issues and legislation about which constituents are concerned, and through receiving, clarifying, and summarizing constituent communications by telephone and in person.

•Policy projects: Interns will have the opportunity to assist staff in researching and developing ideas and background on legislative and regulatory changes related to local need and outreach.
