News of the Day: Wage Theft

| Comments (1)
Corresponding with our committee's hearing today about the GAO’s undercover investigation into wage theft of America’s vulnerable workers, ABC News has an article and corresponding video about how the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour division under the previous administration failed to investigate legitimate complaints by employees. Building upon this investigation the New York Times has an article highlighting the problems with procedures and staff training which cost employees lost wages.

The Bush-ites need to be cleaned out of the Labor Department. It aint pay to play for the Republicans anymore.Big multi-national construction companies have influenced this in the form of campaign donations.
What happens is,a worker will be called a laborer-paid the laborers prevailing wage, when he`s actually doing the work or description of another craft or trade. These are examples, usually the craftsman will be labeled & given the lower wage rate, with the company, who controls the money, pocketing the wage difference, thus promoting cheaper bids and collusion at the federal level.Generally speaking, when a worker asks for the correct classification and pay that person all of a sudden ,has run out of work at the jobsite, and is given a termination.
The "Miller Act" section 3131 states that employees have 1 year to recover their wage discrepancies before it`s deemed too late.Worker misclassification is the most prevalent form of robbery on Federal Davis-Bacon Construction Projects. The Obama Administration needs to follow through on this A.S.A.P.because the economic stimulus package will use "local prevailing wage",Davis-Bacon Act,to apply to all Federal Construction Projects.
God Speed to the Government Accountability Office, thanks for the undercover investigation.
