Bill Honoring America's Spiritual Heritage Passes House (July 2009) PDF Print

I wanted to follow up on a recent e-update and let you know that the House of Representatives today passed H. Con Res. 131, which would require that the national motto, "In God We Trust," and the Pledge of Allegiance be engraved at the Capitol Visitors' Center. Unlike the Capitol building, this new facility currently lacks such displays of our nation’s spiritual heritage. The measure now awaits consideration in the Senate.

I strongly supported this legislation because I believe the Capitol Visitor Center should include displays that reflect our nation’s rich spiritual heritage. This heritage—which began with the early settlers and still flourishes today—is an important part of our nation’s history and helped shape many of the fundamental principles that have come to define the United States. Rather than ignoring this heritage, or fostering an atmosphere of hostility toward religion in the public sphere, I believe we should embrace our spiritual heritage and recognize the positive role faith continues to play in our society.
