DHS Report's Insult to Veterans Unacceptable(April 2009) PDF Print
You may have read recent news stories that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released a report stating that veterans returning from overseas deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan could become involved in "terrorist groups."  I find this portrayal to be incredibly offensive to the men and women who have fought for American freedom-and against terrorists-all over the world.  At a time when the Obama administration has frequently refrained from referring to al Qaeda and their counterparts as 'terrorists', the DHS apparently has little problem invoking the term to make unsubstantiated and stereotypical assessments about the character of veterans returning from combat.  These courageous men and women deserve the utmost respect for their sacrifices, and DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano should apologize for her Department's unacceptable portrayal of them.
