Rep. Yvette D. Clarke Statement On Sec. Spelling Testifying At Student Loan Hearing

Washington, DC -- On Thursday, May 10, 2007, U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings will testify before House Education and Labor Committee.  Rep. Yvette D. Clarke (NY-11), a member of the Committee issued the following statement:

“I look forward to hearing the testimony of Secy. Spellings on Thursday,” offered Rep. Clarke.  “There are several unanswered questions on the student loan and Reading First programs that need to be addressed.  This Committee is committed to finding the answers.  I applaud Chairman Miller for his leadership on this broad reaching issue.”

House Education and Labor Committee has been leading investigations into the mismanagement, conflicts of interest, and corrupt practices undermining these multi-billion-dollar programs. Last month, the committee held separate investigative hearings on the Reading First program and on the student loan industry.  This will be the first time that Secretary Spellings will appear before the Committee.
