Congressman Al Green is honored to be the first member to represent the newly drawn 9th Congressional District. The 9th District is uniquely one of the most culturally rich and ethnically diverse districts in the country. With its large African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American, and immigrant population, the 9th Congressional District is a microcosm of the nation. This presents Congressman Green with an opportunity to work to lay the foundation for the full participation of all 9th District constituents in our nation’s political and economic institutions; an initiative he considers vital to the future success of the community.

The 9th District spans the southwest metropolitan portion of the City of Houston and contains areas of the City of Missouri City in Fort Bend County. The district is home to some of the area's finest attractions such as: the Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans; the Reliant Astrodome, the 8th Wonder of the World; the Reliant Arena, home to the largest rodeo in the world; and Six Flags Astroworld Theme Park.

Thousands from around the world travel to the 9th District to visit family and friends, while others come seeking medical assistance at the world renowned Texas Medical Center. The medical center has forty-two member institutions, many of whom are in the 9th District such as, The Methodist Hospital, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital, Texas Woman’s University Institute of Health Sciences, UT Houston School of Public Health, and UT Houston School of Nursing. The 9th District is also home to the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, VA Hospital, which serves as the primary health care provider for more than 137,000 veterans in southeast Texas.

The residents of the 9th Congressional District have long been involved in political and civic activities. Together with the support of the City of Houston, area residents joined to form neighborhood organizations, also known as Super Neighborhoods. This initiative is intended to provide avenues for more effective community input into city government policy making, budgeting, planning, and service delivery systems. Currently there are nineteen Super Neighborhoods in the 9th District.
