You Weigh In: Labor Dept Offers Assistance to Illegal Immigrants

This week, the Labor Department kicked off a campaign to offer assistance to illegal immigrants who believe they are facing wage disparities. In the Public Service Announcement, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis says workers -- legal or not -- have the right to fair wages.

"You work hard, and you have the right to be paid fairly," she says. "And it is a serious problem when workers in this country are not being paid every cent they earn. Remember, every worker in America has the right to be paid fairly, whether documented or not. So call us."

At a time of almost 10% unemployment, I believe our Department of Labor should be focusing all of their energies on protecting American jobs and enforcing our labor laws. It is illegal to hire workers that are in our country illegally.

    What a way to get illegal immigrants coming forward and be identified. Should they complain to receive full wages, they can receive a one-way ticket home instead. Clever!

    Where is the congressional oversight of these cabinet secretaries? How are they allowed to continue to break our laws, make policy and ignore the people? These incidents are a direct result of an inept congress who is more intent in playing politics and getting re-elected than effective governing .

    I have no problem with a labor Secretary saying " workers -- legal or not -- have the right to fair wages". Employers are not supposed to hire illegal workers. Anyone hired should be getting fair wages. The people hireing illegal workers are the reason they come here.

    As Daniel P posted it would be a nice way to find the illegals, but I think this administrations objective is create a trust with illegal in an effort to build their future base. This congress (currently I can not give them the respect of a capitol c) must stop the actions of this president.

    Illegal immigration is not a black and white issue. A hundred years ago it was the Irish, now it's the Mexicans. It's always easier to blame someone else.
