WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) issued the following statement today in response to the introduction of the St. Louis Metro East Levee Issues Alliance:
“Just over three years ago, I convened a levee summit to discuss the condition of the Metro East levees. We learned at that time that due to FEMA flood remapping, our levees would be decertified. Since then, there has been tremendous local cooperation to put a plan in place to fix the levees. The St. Louis Metro East Levee Issues Alliance is the latest example of this effort, and it will help make our efforts on the levees an even greater regional partnership. I look forward to working with this new organization, and I am hopeful that H.R. 5114, legislation that has passed the House and would provide time to improve the levees without mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements, will be approved by the Senate.”
