WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, issued the following statement today regarding President Obama’s new plan for $50 billion in national infrastructure improvements:
“I have been a long-time proponent of the benefits of increased infrastructure investment, so I applaud the President's plan to direct $50 billion for this purpose over the next year. Improving our roads, bridges, aviation system and levees not only creates good-paying jobs and makes our communities safer, it leaves us with long-term economic assets that make our economy more efficient well into the future. This is precisely why infrastructure investment is a high priority for business leaders. In our region, we have a particular need to upgrade our levee systems, and I have encouraged President Obama to emphasize levee and lock and dam restoration going forward. I will continue to work with the President and my colleagues on a multi-year transportation bill.”
