WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Alton Police Department and Fairview Heights Police Department have both received Secure Our Schools (SOS) program grants – $112,229 to Alton and $9,885 to Fairview Heights – through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program of the U.S. Department of Justice. The SOS program focuses on improving safety by preventing school violence in and around schools.
“As a strong supporter of the federal community policing program, I am pleased that these funds are going to our area,” said Costello, a former law enforcement officer. “Increased law enforcement resources have proven to be an important factor in reducing crime in our region and nationwide, and it is critical to provide a safe learning environment so that students can reach their full academic potential.”
