WASHINGTON – House Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Subcommittee would receive a classified briefing in the near future from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regarding the apprehension of Faisal Shahzad on Monday in connection with the attempted bombing of Times Square in New York City over the weekend. Shahzad was able to board a flight bound for the United Arab Emirates despite being added to the no-fly list earlier in the day. He was removed from the plane as it prepared to leave the gate.
“I want to first commend the good work done by the various law enforcement agencies and departments that contributed to the arrest,” said Costello. “While our aviation security system ultimately worked in this case, we need to have a full understanding of this incident – particularly how Shahzad got on the flight when he was on the no-fly list. This is another example of why a good security system has backups and redundancies in place, and why we must constantly be evaluating our performance.”
