BELLEVILLE STUDENT, PEACE ESSAY CONTEST WINNER MEETS WITH CONGRESSMAN COSTELLO IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

WASHINGTON – Erica Hinz, a high school student from Fairview Heights, met with U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) in his Washington, D.C., office today. Erica was in Washington to attend a special educational program after winning first place in the state-level competition of the 23rd annual National Peace Essay Contest, sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace. She will receive a $1,000 college scholarship for submitting the best essay from Illinois on the topic, “The Effectiveness of Nonviolent Civic Action.”

Erica is a senior at Belleville East High School, where she is active in theatre and many other clubs. She is excited to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the fall, where she will major in biology.
