WASHINGTON – Samir Shah, an engineering student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, met with U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) in his Washington, D.C. office earlier this week. Samir was in Washington to attend an awards ceremony; he and four other SIUC engineering students – Whitney Belt, Lisa Furby, Eric Hoffman and Ronnie Mays Jr. – recently won a national design competition, the AbilityOne Network Design Challenge, which helps people with disabilities gain access to jobs or advance at their place of employment.
Samir was accompanied on his visit to Costello’s office by members of Specialized Training for Adult Rehabilitation (START), an organization based in Murphysboro. The SIUC student engineering team worked with START to design an improved stapling mechanism that its clients could use in their job of stapling calendars to screen-printed vinyl backs.
