WASHINGTON – Ms. Kathleen Dwyer, an O’Fallon resident and science teacher at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School in the St. Louis area, met with U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) in his Washington, D.C., office today. Kathleen was in Washington to attend the 2010 Society for Science & the Public (SSP) Fellows Institute. Kathleen was selected as a Fellow by SSP from a large national pool of applicants for her vision to promote science in under-resourced communities.
The SSP Fellows Program provides funds and training to selected science and math teachers who serve under-resourced students, to enable interested and motivated students to perform high-quality, independent scientific research. SSP Fellows learn how to design independent research programs to be implemented in their schools and develop a strong network of scientific mentors for their students during the Fellows Institute.
Kathleen currently teaches Chemistry, AP Chemistry and Science Research. Her students compete in the Science Fair, Symposia, Debate and Olympiad. Kathleen has earned National Board Certification, a Master’s Degree in Science Education and is currently pursuing another Master of Science in Zoology. Her studies took her to Belize last year, and this year she will learn about conservation research programs while in Kenya. Kathleen said she looks forward to collaborating with other highly motivated teachers from across the country who share her passion for science, reasoning and research.
