WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Alton Fire Department has received a grant in the amount of $386,980 through the Assistance to Firefighters program of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The funds come from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, which is intended to support the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
The Assistance to Firefighters grant program provides critical resources to fire departments across the nation and in our region to maintain an adequate level of safety in our communities. Costello, a former police officer, emphasized that it is essential that our first responders have adequate staffing to assist with local and national emergencies.
“In addition to responding to local emergencies, our firefighters and other first responders play an important role as part of our national system of responding to large scale disasters and other catastrophic events. Federal resources to help maintain our local response capability serves an important national purpose. Our first responders put their lives on the line every day, and their dedication deserves our full support.”
