WASHINGTON -- U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the City of Alton, through the Drug Free Alton Coalition, has been awarded a $125,000 Drug Free Communities Support Program grant from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funds will be used for community-based anti-drug efforts, primarily targeting youths.
"Drug abuse continues to have serious consequences, for communities, families and individuals," said Costello, a former law enforcement official. "Community-based initiatives such as this, focusing on prevention strategies among our young people, are important steps in combating the problems associated with drug abuse."
