Fortenberry Help HAITI Act Back
FYI: After numerous legislative trials, Congressman Fortenberry’s Help HAITI Act is scheduled to be back on the House Floor today. The following news story appeared with Democratic leadership’s new take on Fortenberry’s bill:
POLITICO: “… GOOD NEWS FOR HAITIAN ORPHANS: Democratic leaders never said that they WOULD marry the DREAM Act to a bill providing permanent residency to Haitian orphans now in the U.S. BUT they were holding back the Haiti bill as a possible vehicle for DREAM because Republicans can't amend the Senate-passed Haiti measure with a motion to recommit. Now, with DREAM's future as clouded as ever, the Haiti bill has appeared on tomorrow's schedule for a vote under suspension of the rules. “This legislation will ensure that these orphans- who have already suffered so much-will no longer be in legal limbo here in the United States. It is my hope that this bill will be signed into law as soon as possible," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said in announcing the new item on Wednesday's floor agenda.”
