WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI), who was an original co-sponsor of the legislation, released the following statement:

“Twenty years ago today, we made great progress towards equality and inclusion in our nation when the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law.  Throughout my career I have always fought to promote and protect human dignity, which is why I joined my colleagues to introduce this historic bi-partisan legislation. When the ADA became law, no longer could someone be denied employment or educational opportunities because of a disability. No longer would people in wheelchairs have to struggle to access public buildings and transportation.  And no longer could disabled Americans be treated as second class citizens or denied the chance to reach their fullest potential.

Today is also an historic occasion, as Congressman Jim Langevin became the first Member of Congress in a wheelchair to preside over the House.  This achievement illustrates the tremendous progress we have made towards full inclusion in our society. But there is still work to be done to ensure that all Americans with disabilities are able to reach their full potential, both in their educational pursuits and in their careers. I will continue to work with my colleagues on the Committee on Education and Labor to pursue that important goal.”
