Wasserman Schultz Announces Federal Grant for Hiring of Police Officers in South Florida Communities

(Washington, DC) – Today, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) announced 63 new police officers will be hired to protect and serve South Floridians. The Department of Justice issued grants of more than $16 million to Miami-Dade County ($12 million), Town of Davie ($2.25 million), City of Hollywood ($1.9 million) and City of Wilton Manors ($218,000).

“These grants are great news for South Florida communities seeking to enhance the proven success of community policing in deterring crime,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “The addition of these grants is especially welcome during this time of limited resources and will add to the safety and security of South Floridians.”

The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) issued $298 million in grants to 379 different local law enforcement agencies in 51 states and territories.

The State of Florida received more than $28 million in grants which will lead to the hiring of 127 new police officers.

COPS is the office of the U.S. Department of Justice that advances the practice of community policing in America’s state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies.  COPS does its work principally by sharing information and making grants to police departments around the United States.
