County History and Information:
Marshall County was established in 1836 and named after John Marshall, United States Supreme Court Chief Justice from 1801 to 1835. The county seat, Lewisburg, was named after Meriwether Lewis, best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Three of Tennessee governors were born in Marshall County: Henry Horton, Jim Nance McCord and Buford Ellington. In the late 1930s, the county was the nation’s largest Jersey cattle producer. The first official register for the Tennessee Walking Horses was in Lewisburg, established in the mid-1930s. That registry is still maintained at the Lewisburg headquarters of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association.
