Dreier: Dems Should Scrap Tax Hike Vote
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-CA), House Rules Committee Ranking Republican, called on the Democratic Leadership to abandon their plans to hold an up or down vote on increasing taxes for families and small businesses and instead allow alternatives to be considered. Dreier said the Democratic Leadership should not restrict the debate in order to impose a massive tax hike. He noted that a clear bipartisan majority supports an extension of all current tax rates.
“If the Democratic Majority insists on holding a vote that raises taxes on families and small businesses in this weak economy, they should also allow the bipartisan majority in favor of extending all current tax rates to be heard,” Dreier said. “A highly restrictive process that limits the vote to a single option is not the right approach. Any vote on this critical issue should be the result of a genuine debate. Forcing through tax hikes with a ‘take it or leave it’ approach is not what the American people expect from their Congress.”
