Bennett Votes Against Nomination of Elena Kagan to Supreme Court

Says her strong opinions will get in the way of being a fair judge

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah) today issued the following statement after voting against the nomination of Elena Kagan to serve on the United States Supreme Court:

“I have examined whether Ms. Kagan will uphold and defend the principles contained in the Constitution and while she has an impressive legal mind and prestigious background, she is not a jurist. She has never shown any inclination toward impartiality and continues as Solicitor General to advocate for her own beliefs and priorities.

“I don’t mind judges who have strong opinions, as long as they don’t let that get in the way of what the law says. But she has shown a willingness to let her strong opinions dictate what the law should be and it is for these reasons, I oppose the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.”
