Bennett Visits ATK Workers to DIscuss Efforts to Save Constellation and Ares

SALT LAKE CITY - Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah) today visited Alliance Techsystems Incorporated's (ATK) solid rocket booster plant in Promontory, Utah to meet with employees and executives and discuss his efforts to prevent the Obama administration from terminating Constellation and Ares. ATK, an aerospace and defense company in Utah, is one of the companies that would be affected by the cancellation of NASA's Constellation program.

"I am going to continue to do everything I can over the next several months to save Constellation and Ares," said Bennett. "I was pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with the many men and women at ATK who work to improve our country's missile defense capabilities. Terminating the program will cost Utah thousands of jobs and negate the incredible progress that ATK has been making over the years to strengthen our space and missile defense programs."

During his site visit today, Bennett met with over one hundred employees to discuss the work he is doing in the Senate to reverse the president's plan to restructure NASA and cancel Constellation. Bennett has been on the front lines fighting to restore funding to Constellation and Ares by requesting federal funding through the Appropriations Committee.

After questioning NASA Administrator Charles Bolden in a Senate hearing in April, Bennett voiced concerns that the administration may try to redirect existing federal funds intended for Constellation to other programs. Bennett successfully included an amendment in the Emergency Supplemental bill that will prohibit NASA from terminating Constellation contracts and using Fiscal Year 2010 funds for anything other than the continued performance of the program.

"I'm not going to sit back and rubber stamp the administration's budget," added Bennett. "The next step in the fight is to secure funding for Constellation and the Ares rocket booster in the Appropriations process."
