Cummings To Participate In Weatherization Recognition

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07), a senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, will join other Maryland elected officials taking part in a press conference Friday morning, recognizing National Weatherization Day and Baltimore becoming a national leader in green and healthy homes.

Since November 2009, Baltimore City has weatherized 687 homes with senior citizens and people with disabilities as the top priority. Weatherization efforts have reduced energy costs by approximately 35% for residents with limited income.

“I am happy to take this step toward becoming a nation that wastes less energy,” said Cummings. “Energy efficiency is one step down a road that ends with a more secure America with the green economy we need to compete against China and India. Weatherization will help our economy grow by creating American jobs in construction, manufacturing and retail; industries that were crushed by the economic crisis. Also, by using less energy, we can cut our use of oil from countries that are unfriendly to us by as many as 7 million barrels a year. I am proud to support National Weatherization Day here in Baltimore.”

A comprehensive approach with The National Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, The National Green and Healthy Homes Initiative and numerous other non-profit groups and agencies has enabled Baltimore to provide holistic services to ensure that homes have reduced asthmatic conditions and are energy efficient, lead paint free, and safe for seniors. In addition, through the partnerships with Baltimore City Community College and Sojourner-Douglass College, 78 people have received jobs as auditors, crew leaders, and crewmembers within the Weatherization Assistance Program. .

The press event will begin at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 29th, and will be located at the Wolfe Street Weatherization Training Facility, 1212 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore.
