Dreier Comments on New Deficit Projections

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), commented today on the release of new budget deficit projections from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO):

"Today's announcements from the OMB and CBO should serve as a wakeup call to the President and the Democratic Majority in Congress that they are spending money we don't have and future generations are going to be left with the tab. From the 'stimulus' bill that failed to stimulate the economy to the proposed government takeover of healthcare, today's announcements demonstrate the fiscal priorities of this Majority have been all wrong.

"While Republicans have proposed sensible, fiscally responsible policies to get the deficit under control and put theAmerican people back to work, they have been repeatedly rejected or ignored by the Democratic Majority. For instance, for the first time in modern Congressional history, the Majority denied Members the opportunity to offer amendments reducing spending on appropriations bills in an open process. This kind of fiscal management is simply unsustainable.

"When Congress returns next month, I stand ready to work together with my Democratic colleagues to get our fiscal house in order. I am hopeful today's announcements will create the bipartisan consensus needed to do the right thing for the American people."
