New Technologies: What's Around the Corner

Hearing to Feature Next Generation Solar Technology, and Companies Sequestering CO2 in Cement and Under Ocean Floor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Cutting pollution and meeting global warming emissions reduction targets will require the deployment of new technology solutions, opening pathways for job growth in new clean energy industries. Advanced coal and large scale solar projects provide a window to the future of low carbon technology and job opportunities.

On Tuesday, July 28th, the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming heard from cutting edge experts in solar and carbon capture technology in a hearing, "New Technologies: What’s Around the Corner."

The hearing featured companies that are working to capture CO2 from power plants -- one placing it under the ocean floor and another combining CO2 with seawater to make cement. In addition, the Committee heard from solar entrepreneurs who are developing solar panels with greater strength and efficiency that use fewer raw materials in production.

Between now and 2030, over $20 trillion will be invested in energy infrastructure worldwide, and an estimated $1.5 trillion will be invested by the U.S. power sector alone. With the recent House passage of the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454) the United States government would invest $190 billion in clean energy solutions in order to meet growing international competition for new energy technology. Low carbon solutions will be necessary to meet emissions reduction of 80% by 2050, goals set forth by both the G8 agreement and the Waxman-Markey legislation.
