Kucinich Urges Immediate Congressional Action On Home Heating Costs

Calls For Passage Of Sanders/Kucinich Home Heating Fairness Act To End Price Gouging

Washington, Dec 15 -

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) today called for immediate Congressional action on the crisis of the skyrocketing price of home heating costs this winter.

“With the temperatures plummeting in Cleveland, and nationwide, and the holiday season just around the corner, Congress must take immediate action to address the growing crisis in home heating costs this winter,” stated Kucinich. “I urge the Congress to pass the Sanders/Kucinich Home Heating Fairness Act of 2005 to bring immediate relief, and warmth, to working families and to end price gouging by the big oil and gas companies.”

The Home Heating Fairness Act of 2005, H.R. 4420, introduced by Congressman Kucinich and Congressman Bernie Sanders (VT) will increase funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) by $22.38 billion over the next decade.  By doing so, millions of senior citizens on fixed incomes, low-income families with children and persons with disabilities to stay warm during winter and make their homes more energy efficient.

“The people of Cleveland area cannot afford for Congress to adjourn for the year without taking action on this vital legislation,” continued Kucinich. “It is far past time that this Congress stand up to the big oil and gas companies and stand with the people who are struggling to keep their homes warm this winter,” concluded Kucinich.
