Cleveland High Schools to Receive Smaller Learning Communities Grant Funds
James Fords Rhodes, Glenville and South High School to Share 3-Year, $926,610 Competitive Grant

Washington, Sep 29, 2000 - Cleveland’s two Members of Congress, Dennis J. Kucinich and Stephanie Tubbs Jones, today announced that the Cleveland Municipal School District has been awarded a $926,610 grant from the Department of Education Smaller Learning Communities Program. The three-year grant will serve Glenville High School, James Ford Rhodes High School, and South High School.

The three high schools will use the grant to employ the Talent Development High School With Career Academies model. This model utilizes various strategies, including: block scheduling, the 9th Grade Success Academy, career academies, rigorous core curriculums that include the Freshman Seminar, “double-doses” of math and English, and expanded academic electives aligned with school-to-work competencies.

This program will support the development of small, safe, and successful learning environments in large high schools, which are classified as schools that include grades 11 and 12 and enroll at least 1,000 students in grades 9 and above. James Fords Rhodes, Glenville and South High Schools meet the criteria with over 1,400 students each
