U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development Releases Five Grants to Cuyahoga County and City of Cleveland for the Elderly, Disabled and Children


Washington, Oct 5, 2000 - Representative Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will provide $5,225,382 in five grants. These grants will provide a for a better community by securing safe and affordable housing for our elderly, disabled and children.

"I am extremely pleased at the announcement of these grants to support safe housing for the elderly, disabled and young children, " said Kucinich. "These programs will make a substantial improvement in the quality of life for our senior citizens, disabled, and young families. I cannot think of a better way to invest resources."

The first grant of $234,090 to the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) will fund three licensed social workers and several elderly residents as assistants. The grant will improve the level of support services for elderly residents at many residential buildings in this community.

The second grant of $100,000 to the Progressive Action Council will fund several comprehensive training programs for the elderly residents of the CMHA. The training program is designed to build community awareness and improve job placement for the elderly.

The third grant of $1,016,730 will fund 200 "Housing Choice" vouchers for disable families. This award will make a substantial improvement in the quality of life for 200 local disabled families.

The fourth grant of $875,000 to Mental Health Rehabilitation & Research will fund an independent living project consisting of 10 one-bedroom units for people with metal health illnesses.

The fifth grant of $2,999,562 to the City of Cleveland will fund a comprehensive program to reduce led paint in all housing to protect our children.
