Washington, Dec 1, 2010 -

Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, incoming Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the report released today from the President’s Fiscal Commission:

“The proposal put forward today by the Co-Chairs of the President’s Fiscal Commission underscores the depth of the fiscal challenges we are facing and the difficult choices that lie ahead. The President has made putting our fiscal house back in order a top priority, and creating this Commission was an important step.  I would like to commend the hard work of the Co-Chairs and the other members of the Commission, who for months have been examining the fiscal problems and possible solutions from a variety of different angles.

“Today’s report demonstrates that closing the deficit will require difficult choices, and, with that in mind, it is a meaningful contribution to the national debate about our economic and fiscal situation. It provides important food for thought as we continue our national discussion about the deficit and national priorities. The proposals in the plan should be put to the following tests: do they promote economic growth, put people back to work, chart a fiscally sustainable course for our nation, and provide a fair deal for working families.  I look forward to working with my colleagues to develop a plan that promotes those priorities and stays true to America’s shared values.”
